The University School Sharks head up I-95 and challenge the Cocoa Tigers in a Class 4A state semifinal on Friday night. Both teams met in the same round on the same field last season and Tigers won 49-14.
University School(11-1) have outscored their opponents 553-122 this season. They received a first-round bye based on the new playoff format for small schools. The Sharks downed Gulliver Prep 40-13 in a regional semifinal and defeated Glades Central 45-14 last week in a regional final. Their only loss this year was in the regular season finale to the defending FHSAA Class 3A state champions Chaminade-Madonna.
The Sharks intends to use their rushing attack on most plays with running backs Kenny McIntosh and Michael Hurt carrying the ball. Quarterback Nick Vattiato can connect passes to a surplus of wide receivers that consists of Joshua Sanguinetti, Zay Flowers, Christian Wells and Jordan Irizarry.
Cocoa(9-3) also had a first-round bye in the postseason. They shut out Astronaut 35-0 in the regional semifinal and knocked off Bishop Verot 38-13 in the regional final. The Tigers were a state finalist in 2017 and won the FHSAA Class 4A state title in 2016. Quarterback D.J. Arroyo will call the signals on offense for the Tigers.
