Longtime District 16 rivals face each other in the Class 6A regional final as the Miami Northwestern Bulls take on the Miami Central Rockets at Traz Powell Stadium on Friday night. The Rockets topped the Bulls 38-10 during the regular season in Week 9.
Miami Northwestern(7-5) is the defending FHSAA Class 6A state champions. It has been a rocky year for the Bulls as they started 3-5, however they have won their last four straight games. They travelled far with road wins over Mainland 31-16 in the regional quarterfinal and Heritage 31-19 in the regional semifinal. They have averaged 30 points per game in their last four contests.
The Bulls can go anytime with either Isaiah Velez or Kemani Brown at quarterback to call the signals. They will split their rushing opportunities between running backs Nathaniel Noel, Javas Jackson and Timothy Burns. Wide receivers Jacquez Stuart, Romello Brinson, Dwight Jackson, Sean Delaughter and Rayquan Berry look to make pass receptions.
Miami Central(10-2) had two tough playoff games so far. The Rockets gained revenge on District 16 champion Carol City 30-21 in a regional semifinal last week. They struggled and pulled out a 35-20 victory at Dillard in a regional quarterfinal. They have outscored their opponents 482-191 this season. They lost their two games this year by a combined 11 points.
The main emphasis for the Rockets offense is quarterback Maurice Underwood. He can pass to anywhere on the field and occasionally run out of the pocket for yardage. Running backs Lexington Joseph and Kejon Owens will get their share of rushing attempts from the backfield. Underwood has several targets to send the ball to which includes wide receivers Anthony Colonel, Jaylin Young, Anthony Frederick, Shamar Zaragoza and Geovanni Ribalta.
