The Miami/Fort Lauderdale region saw the release of the monthly ratings for sports format radio stations. The time frame was from prior to Leap Day until the final week of March.
The shocking effect of the coronavirus pandemic impacted how all local radio stations covered sports. North American professional sports leagues suspended all of their games by March 11.
560 The Joe WQAM-AM remained at a 0.7 and took first place in the market for the eighth consecutive month. They ended a three-month trend of being down. The Florida Panthers were not in a top-eight playoff position in the Eastern Conference when the NHL season was suspended while the University of Miami basketball team completed a below-average campaign.
Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM moved down from a 0.7 to a 0.6 in the period. They were tied with their sister-station WQAM in the prior period and fell to second place. It was the second straight month that they had a downward trend and it's unusual considering that the Miami Heat were constantly fourth in the Eastern Conference prior to the NBA season being suspended.
Fox Sports 640 South Florida WMEN-AM stood with a 0.3 for the third consecutive month and were third in the region for the second time in a row. It has helped them being the flagship station of Florida Atlantic University athletics along with broadcasting Florida Panthers contests.
Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM stayed at a 0.2 for the second straight month and finished in fourth place again in the market. They did broadcast Miami Marlins exhibition games at the end of February and the first half of March.
