The Florida Panthers bashed the Detroit Red Wings 7-2 at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night. It was the first game of a two-game set. The Panthers remain first in the Central Division.
Both teams combined for five goals during the first period. Juho Lummikko started it with his second tally this year at 6:09, followed by the first goal of the season by MacKenzie Weegar at the 7:58 and Patric Hornqvist added to it at 12:45 for a Florida(11-2-2) three-goal lead.
Detroit(4-12-3) broke the shutout with 5:54 left in the first on a goal by Bobby Ryan. It became 4-1 for the Panthers with 4:45 remaining when Aleksander Barkov scored.
There was just one goal in the second period. Aaron Ekblad put in his fifth goal of the campaign with 22 seconds to go for a four-goal margin.
Valtteri Fillpula struck for the Red Wings 2:49 into the third period to cut it down to 5-2. Hornqvist compiled his second goal of the contest and eight of the season at 5:50 with the man advantage. Anthony Duclair capped the victory for the Cats with a tally at 8:56 for a 7-2 lead.
