Right wing Alex Kovalev and defenseman Filip Kuba made their returns to Ottawa for the first time in opposing uniforms as the Florida Panthers lost to the Senators 4-0 on Monday night at Scotiabank Place. The Cats tried to win their first two games of the regular season for the first time since 2005-06. Former Panther and current Senators goalie Craig Anderson improved his career record against Florida to 8-0-1 as he shut out the Panthers with 31 saves.
Ottawa(2-0-0) opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 10:42 of the first period. Center Kyle Turris smacked a one-time slapshot from the low left circle off a cross-ice pass off a feed by defenseman Patrick Wiercioch from the right point. Senators longtime captain and right wing Daniel Alfredsson also got an assist on that play.
Turris picked up his second goal of the game in the second period at 12:07. He sent a left-outlet pass to left wing Guillaume Latendresse as they crossed the Panthers blue line and he returned the puck back to Turris who redirected a shot from the crease area.
The Senators scored two goals late in the third period. They extended their lead to 3-0 on an unassisted goal by center Jim O'Brien with a snap shot from the left circle at 17:35. Right wing Erik Condra bumped defenseman Dmitry Kulikov off the puck for the turnover to initiate the play.
Ottawa left wing Jakob Silfverberg scored first NHL goal in his second game of his NHL career just over one minute later. He blasted a one-time slapshot in the slot area on a pass from center Jason Spezza in the right corner at 18:56.
Florida(1-1-0) was outshot 18-4 in the first period, but outshot Ottawa 27-19 in the final two periods. The Panthers were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Senators went 1-for-4. The Cats will have no time to rest as they visit Montreal for their only time this season on Tuesday night and face the Canadiens.
