An agreement has been made for Entercom Communications to merge with CBS Radio later on this year. Both corporations own several South Florida radio stations as CBS Radio has three entities while Entercom has four. The name for all seven stations would be under Entercom should it be approved by shareholders of both corporations and the Federal Communications Commission.
Both organizations have something in common as they own a sports format radio station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market. CBS Radio acquired Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM in October 2014 from Beasley Broadcasting. Entercom picked up 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM in July 2015 from Lincoln Financial Media. WQAM has run an all-sports format since April 1993 while The Ticket started in August 2004.
There is a number of possibilities how this situation could end should the merger go through. Both sports stations could stay intact as two separate organizations, merge together as one station or eliminate one of them by flipping the format. It certainly would have a dramatic effect on the job status of on-air talent, producers, board operators, engineers and business personnel at both radio stations.
