High schools from South Florida captured three different FHSAA football titles in 2018. It was a step down for South Florida because the region won four state championships last year.
Two Broward County teams were able to take state titles. Cardinal Gibbons won their first state championship in Class 5A as they defeated North Marion 48-10. The Chiefs along the way ended the two-year title reign of American Heritage.
Chaminade-Madonna repeated as the FHSAA Class 3A state champions. They were able to beat Kings Academy 38-10. Kings Academy was the only Palm Beach County school to play in a state final game this year.
St. Thomas Aquinas fell in the Class 7A state championship game to Lakeland 33-20. It was the first time in eight state title games that the Raiders lost in Orlando. They were looking to win their fourth title in five years and 11th overall.
Only one Dade County team won a state title at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Miami Northwestern won their second straight FHSAA Class 6A state title as they faced Armwood again and blanked them 22-0. The Bulls matched the feat they accomplished back with back-to-back championship in 2006 and 2007.
The defending FHSAA Class 2A state champions Champagnat Catholic almost repeated, however they lost to North Florida Christian 28-20 in the state title game. Columbus reached the FHSAA Class 8A state championship game, but they were upset by Mandarin 37-35.
