The Florida Panthers finished their season-high, eight-game home stand as they were edged by the New York Rangers 5-4 in a shootout at BB&T Center on Saturday night. The Panthers had a 3-2-3 record during their two-week stint in South Florida. It was the only appearance by the Rangers in Sunrise this season.
New York(14-12-3) scored at the 3:37 mark of the first period. Tony DeAngelo fired a slapshot the left point that was saved by Roberto Luongo. Kevin Hayes tapped the rebound slightly to his left in the crease and Mika Zibanejad swept in the puck.
The Blueshirts added a shorthanded goal with 1:50 left in the first. Hayes centered the puck from the end wall to the low slot. Vladislav Namestnikov was all alone, skated a couple of steps and scored on a forehand shot.
In the second period, Florida(11-11-6) converted on the power play 57 seconds in to cut it to 2-1. Keith Yandle rocketed a slapshot from the right point through traffic by Henrik Lundqvist. Mike Hoffman and Jonathan Huberdeau were credited with assists on the play.
The Panthers evened it up 2-2 at 4:14. Following a Yandle feed in the neutral zone, Huberdeau carried the puck into the Rangers zone on the left side, went to the top left circle and placed a soft wrist shot through the legs of Lundqvist. It was the 300th point for Huberdeau in his NHL career.
The Rangers regained the lead 6:28 into the second. DeAngelo cycled the puck from the left point to Brady Skjei on the left point. His sailing snap shot went off of Matt Beleskey in the left circle for the tally.
The Cats tied it up 3-3 with 1:40 remaining in the period. The Rangers turned it over at their own blue line. Aleksander Barkov tapped the puck to Huberdeau on the left side and he sent a cross-ice pass. Aaron Ekblad scored on a wrist shot from the inner right circle.
New York moved out in front 4-3 just 1:32 into the third period. The puck slide up to the left point and Fredrik Claesson blasted a slap shot for the go-ahead goal.
Florida put in a goal with the man advantage with 9:09 left in the third to make it 4-4. Yandle angled a pass from the top of the zone to the left wing Barkov scored on a snap shot from the top left circle.
In overtime, the Rangers thought they won the game with 8.7 seconds left, but the goal was disallowed. Namestnikov went though the right circle and shoveled a shot which Luongo saved, however his left hand moved forward and put the puck in the Panthers net.
The game went into a shoutout and New York prevailed. Zibanejad scored on their first attempt as he lifted a backhand shot. Kevin Shattenkirk put in a snap shot during the second attempt for the Blueshirts. Huberdeau kept the Panthers in it as he put in a snap shot on the second attempt. Kevin Hayes wrapped it up on the Rangers third attempt with a forehand shot.
