2018 was a year in which all four professional South Florida sports teams did not have great seasons. Only one club made the postseason this year. It was an improvement over no teams last year.
The Miami Heat was the only team in the South Florida region to make the playoffs as they captured the Southeast Division title. They finished sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 44-38 record. The Heat lost their first-round series to the Philadelphia 76ers four games to one.
The Miami Dolphins began the season with a 3-0 and in first place. They slipped, fell out of playoff picture and were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16. The Dolphins finished in second place in the AFC East with a 7-9 record.
The Florida Panthers started off slow to begin their regular season. They made a tremendous run during the final month of the season, however they were eliminated from entering the NHL playoffs in their second-to-last game of the regular season. The Panthers had a 44-30-8 record (96 points) and finished one point behind the New Jersey Devils for the final playoff spot.
It was a rebuilding year for the Miami Marlins in the first season with new ownership comprised of Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter. They finished last in the National League East with a 63-98 record. The Marlins ended up 26 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves.
