Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez improved his record in his rookie year to 5-1 as he struck out nine batters. He dropped his earned run average down to 1.34 this season. It is the lowest ERA by a pitcher in his first nine career starts during the last 60 years since Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 0.91 in 1981 and Steve Rogers of the Montreal Expos with a 1.20 in 1973.
The Fish, who have won eight of their last 11 games, will visit the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night in Fenway Park. Pittsburgh(35-41) have fallen in 11 of their last 12 contests.
Miami(45-34) got out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. Jonathan Davis belted a solo home run to left field on a 3-2 pitch for his second homer with his new club.
The Marlins made it 2-0 in the eighth inning. Yuli Gurriel drove in Bryan De La Cruz on a single through the right side.
