American Heritage Cans St. Augustine

     The American Heritage Patriots handled the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets 38-28 in a FHSAA Class 4A state semifinal at Heritage Field in Plantation on Friday night. The Patriots advanced to the Class 4A state championship game and will face Jones next Thursday night in Miami. 
     American Heritage(11-2) quickly took a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the contest. Quarterback Malachi Toney connected a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Bennett. 
     St. Augustine(11-2) was able to cut the lead down tot 7-2 on the Pats next possession. Their defense picked up a safety midway through the first quarter and they were down 7-2. 
     The Patriots increased their lead to 14-2 with three minutes remaining in the first. Toney fired a 67-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Jeffar Jean-Noel. 
     The Yellow Jackets answered back with seconds to go in the opening quarter and trailed 14-9. Running back Trendell Anderson sprinted in from 25 yards away for a score.  
     The Pats increased their lead to 21-9 with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Toney raced in from two yards out on a touchdown run. 
     It became 28-9 for American Heritage with three minutes remaining in the first half. Toney tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jean-Noel. 
     In the second half, St. Augustine cut into the deficit. They got into the end zone twice during the third quarter and trailed 28-23. 
     The Patriots were able to get an eight-point cushion 31-23 at the seven-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Gavin Harvey came in and booted a 24-yard field goal.
