Clearwater Central Catholic Ends Cardinal Newman

The Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders edged the Cardinal Newman Crusaders 22-21 in overtime at Sam Budnyk Field in West Palm Beach on Thursday night in a FHSAA Class 1A state semifinal. It was the only high school football postseason game played in Florida tonight.
The Marauders advanced to their third straight state championship game and will face either Chaminade-Madonna or Trinity Christian Academy next Wednesday night in Miami. The Crusaders fell short of reaching the FHSAA Football Finals for the first time in school history.
Cardinal Newman(10-2) moved out ahead 7-0 on a touchdown pass two minutes into the first quarter. Clearwater Central Catholic(12-2) tied it up 7-7 on a 25-yard touchdown run by running back Nasir Hutchinson with seven minutes to go in second quarter.
Both teams reached the end zone once in the third quarter and it was tied 14-14. The Marauders picked up a rushing touchdown by quarterback Jershaun Newton from 60 yards away just over one minute into the second half. The Crusaders responded with seven minutes remaining in the third on a rushing touchdown.
Neither high school scored in the fourth quarter and the contest went into overtime. The Crusaders went first in the extra session which resulted in a touchdown run and an extra point. The Marauders were victorious on a three-yard touchdown run by fullback Keo Jenkins and a two-point conversion pass for a 22-21 win.
