The West Boca Raton Bulls hosted their first football state semifinal in school history and defeated the Southridge Spartans 14-11 on Friday night in Boca Raton. The Bulls will play for their first state football title ever when they take on Osceola next Thursday afternoon.
Southridge(11-3) was able to go out in front early in the first quarter. The Spartans first drive ended up with a field goal minutes into the contest and gave them a 3-0 lead.
West Boca Raton(14-0) leaped over their opponent to take a 7-3 lead with three minutes remaining in the first. Linebacker Marc-Sanchtz Lordeus recovered a fumble and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Bulls extended their lead to 14-3 midway through the third quarter. Quarterback Trey Moran was able to race around the right end from one yard out.
The Spartans cut it to 14-11 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Quarterback James Perrone fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Darius Clements on the right hash marks. They picked up a two-point conversion with Clements catching the ball.
It was a crazy final 12 seconds of the game where Southridge almost got the lead. Moran scrambled and fumbled the ball on an attempted pass. Linebacker Joshua McDowell ran it back down the sideline to within a couple of yards from paydirt and fumbled it away. It ended up going out of the end zone for a touchback with 2.7 seconds left in the fourth.
