The Miami Marlins lost their eighth straight game as they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. The Marlins have lost 15 of their last 17 games and dropped to 7-19 at home this season.
Tampa Bay(28-24) wasted no time in the first inning with two runs against Tom Koehler for the early lead. Ben Zobrist led off with a base hit to left-center field and advanced to third on a double by Matt Joyce to right field. Kelly Johnson knocked Zobrist in on a single to right field and then Joyce scored as Evan Longoria grounded into a double play.
Miami(13-40) responded against Roberto Hernandez and put up one run in the bottom of the first inning. Chris Coghlan started with a double into center field and scored as the next batter Placido Polanco flew out to right field.
The Rays added an additional run in the seventh inning. James Loney doubled to deep right field with one out then Desmond Jennings singled to center field. Yunel Escobar followed with a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Loney.
Koehler pitched eight inning as he allowed three runs on seven hits and dropped to 0-3 this season. Hernandez failed to get the complete game as he gave up one unearned run on three hits in 8 2/3 innings and improved to 3-5.
