The Miami Marlins barely avoided a shut out in a tense ninth inning as they were defeated by the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Field. The Fish have lost four straight games and 11 of their last 13.
Jack Peavy threw a complete game for the White Sox as he went all nine innings, allowed one run on six hits and improved to 6-2. Marlins starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco hurled 7 1/3 innings and gave up one run on eight hits.
Chicago(23-24) took their first lead during the third inning against Nolasco. Alejandro De Aza led off with a single into center field. Alexei Ramirez followed with a double to deep left field to score De Aza.
Miami(13-36) tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. After Placido Polanco fouled out to first base, Derek Dietrich smacked a solo home run off Peavy to right field on a 1-2 pitch for his third homer of this season.
The Pale Hoses responded with a game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth against Ryan Webb. Dewayne Wise began with a double to left field and then he scored on a base hit by Conor Gillaspie to left field.
