Marlins End Long Losing Streak

The Miami Marlins snapped their nine-game losing streak on Friday night with a 5-1 win over the New York Mets at Marlins Park. The Fish, who entered this game after they dropped 16 of their last 18 games, finished with a 6-22 record in the month of May.
Miami(14-41) put up four runs during the seventh inning against Shaun Marcum. Derek Dietrich led off with a double into right-center field and advanced to third on a base hit to right by Marcell Ozuna. After Chris Coghlan struck out, Dietrich scored on a single by Ed Lucas to right-center field. Following a Greg Dobbs walk, Jeff Mathis knocked in Ozuna on a sacrifice fly to center field. Jordan Brown came up as a pinch-hitter as he drove Lucas and Dobbs in on a double to deep center field.
New York(22-30), who just swept the New York Yankees in a four-game series, got their only run of the game on a two-out rally in the eighth inning. Omar Quintanilla reached base on an infield hit against Mike Dunn. Daniel Murphy then doubled to deep center field for Quintanilla to score.
Greg Burke came in and surrendered the final run for the Marlins in the bottom of the eighth. After Placido Polanco grounded out to third, Dietrich reached second base on a throwing error by Quintanilla. Dietrich crossed the plate on a double by Ozuna to left field.
Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner picked up his first decision this season with a win. He pitched seven innings and allowed no runs on five hits. Marcum dropped to a dismal 0-6 as he gave up four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
