The Chicago Cubs pulled off a four-run frame in the fifth inning to defeat the Miami Marlins 4-2 at Wrigley Field on Thursday afternoon. Mark Buerhle, who played 11 seasons with the crosstown White Sox, made his first appearance in Chicago since he joined the Marlins as a free agent. He dropped his record to 9-9 as he went five innings and gave up four runs on six hits.
The Cubs got all their runs in the fifth when Alfonso Soriano picked up his 14th home run of the season to lead off the inning. He smacked a solo shot into left field on the first pitch. The next three batters would got on base as Jeff Baker singled to left, Geovany Soto walked and Darwin Barney singled to right. Luis Valbuena hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Baker. Two batters later, Reed Johnson singled into left field with Soto and Barney coming in.
Donovan Solano batted for Buerhle in the sixth inning as he smacked a lead-off triple to deep right field. Emilio Bonafacio would knock him in on a ground out to the pitcher. Paul Maholm(8-6) pitched eight innings for Chicago and allowed one run on five hits.
Miami would add one more run in the ninth inning off Cubs closer Carlos Marmol. Carlos Lee went to first on a walk. He would score three batters later as Greg Dobbs singled to center field. The Marlins begin a three-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Friday night.
