Pittsburgh took the early lead in the first inning. Alex Presley led off with a single to left field and stole second after Neil Walker struck out. Andrew McCutchen followed as he knocked an RBI-single into center field to score Presley.
Pedro Alvarez extended the Pirates lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning with a two-run homer to right field on a 0-1 count. Casey McGehee had doubled to deep right field prior to that. It was the 21st home run by Alvarez this season.
