The Miami Marlins began a long eleven-game west coast trip on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. The Fish, who are now 3-10 on the road this season, have won nine of their last ten games as they jumped to first place in the National League East.
San Diego(15-21) scored in an unlikely way during the second inning against Jacob Turner. Their starting pitcher Ian Kennedy hit his first career home run with two out on a 2-0 pitch into left field.
In the sixth inning, Miami(20-15) was able to even the game with a two-out rally off Kennedy. Christian Yelich doubled to deep left field and then scored on a base hit by Derek Dietrich into right.
The Marlins would take their first lead of the contest in the top of the 11th with another two-out rally. Dietrich got to first on an error by second baseman Jedd Gyorko while Dale Thayer was pitching. Giancarlo Stanton came up and slammed his league-leading 11th home run of the season on a 0-2 count to right-center field.
Turner allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work. Kennedy went seven innings for the Padres, struck out 12 and surrendered one run on four hits. Steve Cishek got his seventh save of the year as he pitched a hitless 11th inning.
