Tre Mason was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the third round as the 75th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday night in New York City. He played high school football with the Park Vista Cobras for four years mainly as a running back from 2007 until 2010. His best season for them was in his senior year when he had 1,643 yards and 24 touchdowns. He started off as a kickoff returner at the beginning of the 2011 season for Auburn University.
Mason was a junior with the Tigers in 2013 and one of six people nominated for the Heisman Trophy. He rushed for an all-time record of 304 yards in the Southeastern Conference championship game in Atlanta over Missouri and received the MVP award. Mason had 34 carries for 195 yards and a go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter of the BCS Championship game in Pasadena. He broke a school record held by Bo Jackson as he rushed for 1,816 yards during the 2013 season.
He will join a team that has several players with roots in the state of Florida. Former Florida State and St. Thomas Aquinas defensive back Lamarcus Joyner was picked in the second round by the Rams. One-time Miramar and West Virginia wide receiver Stedman Bailey, who was drafted in 2013, is also on the squad. They also have three former Miami Hurricanes with linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, defensive back Brandon McGee and offensive lineman Brandon Washington.
