A new era began for the Plantation Colonels as they edged the Stranahan Dragons 35-28 at P.A.L. Field on Thursday night in a spring football game. It was the first time for the Colonels in four seasons that Chris Lammons was not in charge as quarterback for the team.
It seemed that was forgotten by Plantation as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. They scored on their first possession as running back Antwuan Haynes ran in a touchdown from 17 yards out at 8:10. Haynes added another touchdown from five yards away at 3:19. Quarterback Marquis Flowers made it a 21-point cushion with a two-yard touchdown run up the middle with 54.3 seconds left in the quarter.
Stranahan scored the only points during the second quarter to make it 21-7. Quarterback Javonne Heastie went around the left end and dashed in for a 28-yard touchdown with 8:57 remaining in the first half.
The Colonels struck back quickly at 9:47 of the third quarter. Haynes went down the left sideline on an 80-yard run for his third touchdown of the game.
The Dragons get a touchdown with 2:53 to go in the third when Marvin Robinson caught a five-yard pass from Heastie for a score. They would make another similar play as Heastie connected with Robinson in the back of the end zone on a two-yard pass with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter and closed the gap to 28-21.
Plantation moved it to a 14-point margin when Flowers ran up the middle for a 62-yard touchdown with 4:17 remaining.
Heastie gave Stranahan one last tally with 2:27 to go as he ran in his second touchdown of the game from 37 yards.
