St. Thomas Aquinas held their annual spring inter-squad game on Thursday as the offense defeated the defense 24-11 at Brian Piccolo Stadium. The Raiders will open their 2014 campaign on August 29 at Sun Life Stadium against the American Heritage Patriots.
The first quarter belonged to the defense led by defensive tackle Nicholas Bozo. They stopped the offense on their first three drives, which included holding them to one three-and-out, and compiled seven points for a 7-0 lead.
The Raiders offense then scored on their next three consecutive drives during the second quarter. Quarterback Jake Rizzo found slot receiver Sam Bruce on a curling pattern up the middle and he bumped off several tacklers to get into the end zone from 11 yards away with 5:52 left and tie it at 7-7.
Running back Jordan Scarlett ran around the left end and sprinted in for a 58-yard touchdown with 2:40 remaining to give the offense a 14-7 lead.
On the second play of their next possession, Rizzo connected with wide receiver Blair Barrow on a fly pattern behind the secondary for an 80-yart touchdown pass and the offense led 21-7.
The only scoring in the second half by the Aquinas offense was a 42-yard field goal by Christopher Kirtley.
