The Miami Marlins returned to their woes on the road as they were routed by the San Diego Padres 10-1 at Petco Park on Friday night. The Fish, who had their season-high winning streak of five games snapped, are now 3-11 away from home this season. The Padres scored a season-high ten runs and improved to 10-11 at home this year.
It would not be a good start for Jose Fernandez as San Diego(16-21) put up two runs in the second inning. Yasmani Grandal got to first on an error by first baseman Garrett Jones. Jedd Gyorko followed with a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch.
In the sixth inning, the Padres pounded through with six more runs for an 8-0 margin. Everth Cabrera and Seth Smith both started with singles into right field. After Grandal walked to load the bases, Gyorko smashed a grand slam home run to left field on a 2-0 pitch for his second homer of the game and fifth this year.
Brad Hand came into the game for Fernandez and was unable to stop the long rally. Former Marlin Cameron Maybin got an infield hit and advanced to third on a double to right field by Yonder Alonso. Alexi Amarista then knocked in Maybin with a single into right. After Tyson Ross sacrificed Amarista to second, Alonso would cross the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field by Will Venable.
Ross allowed his only run to Miami(20-16) during the seventh inning. Marcell Ozuna blasted a solo home run with two out to left field on a 3-2 pitch for his sixth homer this season.
The Padres extended their lead to 10-1 as they picked up two runs in the eighth inning off Kevin Slowey. Amarista began with a base hit to center and went to second as pinch-hitter Kyle Blanks got an infield single. Three batters later, Smith drove in Amarista and Blanks with a double to the right-center field wall.
Fernandez fell to 4-2 as he allowed five earned runs on six hits and struck out five in just over five innings of work. Ross moved to 4-3 as he surrendered one run on four hits in seven innings and had eight strikeouts.
