The Montreal Canadiens played in their annual Super Bowl Saturday matinee at Bell Centre and rolled over the Florida Panthers 4-0. The Canadiens have done this tradition since 1991. It continued a string of six consecutive road games for the Panthers, who played their last game on January 21 in Chicago.
Florida(28-16-5) had their season-long, six-game wininng streak snapped. Their previous defeat was against the Arizona Coyotes on January 7. Mike Hoffman had his 10-game point streak stopped while Carey Price picked up his 47th career shutout.
The Habs jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:25 mark of the opening frame. Jeff Petry advanced the puck from his own zone and Joel Armia made a touch pass at the red line. Nick Suzuki raced into the Panthers zone and snapped a shot from the right circle by Sergei Bobrovsky for his 10th goal of the campaign.
Montreal(24-22-7) increased the lead to 2-0 at 6:01 of the second period. Jordan Weal passed it around the boards from the left corner. Petry released a shot from the right wing that was redirected in by Artturi Lehkonen from above the blue paint.
It became a three-goal gap for the Canadiens with 6:25 left in the second. Tomas Tatar scored his 19th goal of the season on assists from Phillip Danault and Petry.
In the third period, Petry collected his fourth assist of the game when Montreal converted with the man advantage at the 10:46 mark. His slap shot from the right point was deflected in by Brendan Gallagher in the low slot for his 17th tally of the year to make it 4-0.
