The Miami Marlins fired president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest on Friday after a 13-year tenure with Jeffrey Loria which consisted of two baseball clubs. Beinfest helped the team capture the 2003 World Series to win their second championship in franchise history. The Fish play their final three games of the 2013 season at home against the Detroit Tigers.
Beinfest's executive assistant Jim Fleming was also let go after 12 years. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria did not make an announcement about who would now be in charge of baseball operations.
Loria hired Beinfest back in 2000 as the assistant general manager when he still owned the Montreal Expos. Beinfest stepped in as interim general manager from October 2001 until February 2002. When Loria purchased the Florida Marlins in February 2002, Beinfest decided to make the shift to South Florida as the new general manager and senior vice president of the team. He was later promoted to president of baseball operations in September 2007.
During his time with the Marlins, Beinfest had made baseball decisions that have been both great and not so great. He had acquired Dontrelle Willis from the Chicago Cubs along with Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez and Ricky Nolasco from the Boston Red Sox. He has also been on the wrong side of trades as he sent Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Red Sox. Beinfest will probably be best remembered for trading eventual 2012 American League Most Valuable Player and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera along with Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers in an eight-player deal back in December 2007.
