The Miami Marlins fell short on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 at Marlins Park. The Fish picked up their 100th loss of the 2013 season and continue to have the second worst record in Major League Baseball ahead of the Houston Astros.
Philadelphia(72-85) attacked early with two runs in the first inning off Henderson Alvarez. Jimmy Rollins slapped a one-out double to deep right field then Chase Utley and Domonic Brown walked to load the bases. Darin Ruf followed with a third consecutive walk to score Rollins from third. Utley would score on a ground out by Kevin Frandsen to short for a Phillies 2-0 lead.
Miami(58-100) chipped at the margin with a run during the second inning against Zack Miner. Giancarlo Stanton led off with a base hit into center field and would cross the plate on a double by Justin Ruggiano to deep center field.
Alvarez pitched seven innings for the Fish, allowed two runs on five hits and dropped his record to 4-6. Miner was unable to pick up the winning decision because he didn't pitch five innings. He hurled only four innings and gave up one run on four hits. Jonathan Papelbon captured his 29th save of the season for the Phillies.
