Van Gundy had previous stints as a NBA head coach. He got his first opportunity with the Miami Heat. The club reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004-05 and lost to Detroit Pistons. Van Gundy was let go during the 2005-06 campaign and was replaced by Pat Riley. The Heat would go on and capture their first NBA championship later that season.
His next stop was with the Orlando Magic and stayed there from 2007 to 2012. He coached the Detroit Pistons from 2014 to 2018.
