The Fish were unable to sweep the two-game series as they lost to the Washington Nationals 8-4 at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. Bryce Harper had his first multiple home run game since he entered the major leagues. He was also thrown out of the game in the ninth inning for slaming his batting helmet toward an umpire.
Ross Detwiler(8-6) of Washington went 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on four hits. Marlins starter Jacob Turner(1-3) allowed five runs on six hits in five innings in the loss.
Jason Werth had a single to left-center field to begin the fourth inning. Harper took a 1-1 pitch to right field for a two-run homer and a Washington 2-0 lead. After Ryan Zimmerman struck out, Adam LaRoche singled to left-center. Michael Morse followed with an RBI-triple to center field and LaRoche scored. Morse would score on a single by Ian Desmond to shallow right field for a Nats 4-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Harper hit his second home run of the game with two out on a 3-0 count to right field. It was his 14th homer of the season.
The Marlins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Giancarlo Stanton scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by John Buck off Detwiler.
Miami added two runs during the sixth inning. With one out and a man on first, Donovan Solano singled to left. Jose Reyes singled to right field for Bryan Petersen to score. Solano then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Carlos Lee as the Marlins cut the lead down to 5-3.
Justin Ruggiano scored off a sacrifice fly to center field by Greg Dobbs off Ryan Mattheus in the seventh inning.
Morse hit a two-out single to right field off Ryan Webb to bring in Zimmerman, who doubled to deep right field earlier in the eighth inning.
Heath Bell gave up two runs in the ninth inning against the Nationals. Kurt Suzuki led off with a solo home run, his second homer of the season, to left field. Stephen Lombardozzi singled, stole second and scored on a single to right field by Werth.
