The Dillard Panthers bashed the Blanche Ely Tigers 42-6 at Otis Gray Jr. Stadium in the 55th edition of the Soul Bowl. It was the first time that Dillard hosted the contest that was played for several decades at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
The Panthers captured the Soul Bowl for the second straight year. The Tigers have won the contest between both schools four of the last six times and seven of the last 10 contests.
Dillard(8-2) was able to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Panthers made it 14-0 midway through the second quarter. Devaughn Mortimer returned a punt 39 yards for a touchdown. It was the second straight week that he scored on a punt return. He did the same thing last week at Boynton Beach.
Late in the second, Dillard scored another touchdown with their special teams unit. Tyrese Clowers blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the Blanche Ely(1-9) end zone for a 21-point margin.
After they put up six more points at the 8:10 mark of the third quarter, the Panthers scored again as running back Leonard Shoultz dashed in from nine yards away to make it 34-0 with 3:47 to go.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers finally broke the shutout and trailed 34-6. Wide receiver Javon Williams was able to score a 32-yard touchdown with 10:53 remaining.
Dillard put in another touchdown and made a two-point conversion for a 42-6 lead. A running clock was used for the rest of the game.
