29 South Florida high schools advanced to the second round of the 2018 FHSAA football playoffs. There were 50 representatives heading into the postseason.
Palm Beach County went from 12 teams to nine. Dwyer, Palm Beach Central, Palm Beach Lakes, Glades Central, American Heritage and Glades Day advanced. Pahokee, Benjamin and Kings Academy had a bye in the first round. Atlantic, Wellington and Cardinal Newman lost.
Broward County dropped from 17 high schools to nine. Deerfield Beach, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cardinal Gibbons. Fort Lauderdale, American Heritage, Plantation and Western moved forward. Chaminade-Madonna and University School were the only school that had the week off. Dillard, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs Charter, Calvary Christian, Piper, West Broward, Miramar and McArthur ended their seasons.
Dade County fell from 21 to 11 participants. Programs that included Carol City, Miami Central, Miami Northwestern, Columbus, Miami Southridge, South Dade, Miami Palmetto, Gulliver Prep, Palmer Trinity and Champagnat Catholic advanced. Booker T. Washington had a bye based on the new playoff format for small schools. Norland, Belen Jesuit, Hialeah, Coral Gables, North Miami, Doral Academy, Monsignor Pace, South Miami, Westminster Christian and Miami Christian fell.
