The Miami Palmetto Panthers got by the Rockledge Raiders 21-14 in West Palm Beach on Saturday. Both two schools made the longest trips to get to the Palm Beach Lakes High School spring football jamboree among the eight participants.
Miami Palmetto scored on their first possession at 9:16 of the first quarter. Wide receiver Jason Marshall made a 48-yard catch on the left hash marks from quarterback Kevin Smith.
The Raiders evened it up with 4:00 remaining in the first. Quarterback Avery Smith delivered a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaheim Mayes on the left side of the end zone.
In the second quarter, Rockledge fumbled the ball at the Panthers five-yard line at the 9:22 mark. Miami Palmetto marched down the field and finished the drive with a 13-yard pass from Kevin Smith to wide receiver Keshawn Washington in the end zone for a 14-7 lead with 7:34 to go.
An unusual play occurred that became costly for Miami Palmetto. Their backup quarterback was sacked at his own 41-yard line, however his momentum threw the ball backward for Raiders linebacker Zachary Lovett to pounce on it and take it to the Panthers three-yard line. On a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, they fumbled on a handoff, but running back Ladarius Tennison recovered the ball in the end zone and Rockledge tied the contest 14-14 with 2:51 remaining.
It took just one play for Miami Palmetto to respond on their next drive. They regained the lead again 14 seconds later as Kevin Smith launched a 70-yard strike to wide receiver Brashard Smith on the right sideline to make it 21-14.
