Panthers Ice Down Penguins

     The Florida Panthers pushed by the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 at FLA Live Arena on Saturday night. It the second contest of a seven-game homestand for the Panthers. 
     Panthers defenseman Gustav Forsling played in his 300th NHL game. Nick Bonino began his second stint with the Penguins organization following his acquisition from the San Jose Sharks. 
     Florida(31-27-6) moved out to a 1-0 lead with 21.6 seconds left in the first period. Matthew Tkachuk forwarded the puck from the neutral zone. Carter Verhaeghe took a shot from the left circle which was saved by Casey DeSmith. Sam Bennett put in a backhand shot from the low slot for his 15th goal of the season. 
     The Panthers increased it to 2-0 on the power play at 4:11 of the second period. Brandon Montour sent the puck from the left wing across the ice. Aleksander Barkov made a cross-ice pass from the low right circle and Aaron Ekblad scored on a one-time forehand shot from the low left circle for his 10th goal of the campaign. 
     Pittsburgh(31-22-9) made it 2-1 on a 5-on-3 man advantage at the 8:51 mark. Evgeni Malkin fired a slap shot from the high slot which was stopped by Sergei Bobrovsky. Jake Guentzel passed the puck out from the top of the crease and Kris Letang ripped a slap shot from the left circle for his eighth goal this season.
     It became 3-1 for the Cats with 10 seconds left in the period. Barkov cranked a high shot from the top right circle and it was saved. Eetu Luostarinen poked in the rebound from the top of the crease and give him his 15th goal. 
     In the third period, Florida got a three-goal margin at 9:53. Tkachuk angled a lead pass from his own blue line. Verhaeghe skated to the inner left circle and snapped a shot for his 32nd goal of the season. Montour was credited with a secondary assist on the play and got his 40th assist in 2022-23.
