Marlins Lose Season Opener To Mets

The Miami Marlins began to celebrate their 30-year anniversary in Major League Baseball as they fell to the New York Mets 5-3 at loanDepot park on Thursday. The Marlins played in their first MLB game on April 5, 1993 when they hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers at Joe Robbie Stadium. The Mets continued their dominance with the best winning percentage among teams for season openers in Major League Baseball history.
Marlins starting pitcher and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara made his season debut. He allowed two earned runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
New York(1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Brandon Nimmo hit a sacrifice fly into left field to scored Daniel Vogelbach.
The Mets added two more runs in the top of the sixth and led 3-1. Francisco Lindor knocked in Nimmo on a sacrifice fly to the edge of the warning track in center field. Two batters later, Jeff McNeil followed with a base hit up the middle and Starling Marte scored.
Miami(0-1) answered back in the bottom of the sixth against Max Scherzer. Jacob Stallings led off the frame with a double to deep left-center field. Two batters later, current American League batting champion and new Marlins player Luis Arraez doubled into the right-center field gap and Stallings crossed the plate. Two batters later, Garrett Cooper blasted a two-run homer to right-center field on a 0-1 pitch for his first home run of the year.
In the seventh inning, New York reclaimed the lead with two runs to make it 5-3. Nimmo drove a line drive to deep center for Eduardo Escobar and Omar Narvaez to score.
