The first two games of the Stanley Cup Final went into overtime for the sixth time in NHL history. The last time it happened was back in 2014. Game 3 will be played in Sunrise on Monday night.
Florida roared out to a 1-0 lead with the man advantage at the 2:07 mark of the first period. Evan Rodrigues grazed the puck in the slot and Nate Schmidt sent a diagonal pass from the high slot. Sam Bennett took a wrist shot from the inner right circle then went past Stuart Skinner for his NHL-leading 13th goal of the playoffs. It ended up being Bennett's third tally in the series.
Edmonton evened it up 1-1 at 7:39. Evan Bouchard banked a pass ahead from his own blue line and Viktor Arvidsson backhanded a lead pass from the red line. Evander Kane carried the puck to the left circle and snapped a shot by Sergei Bobrovsky for his sixth postseason goal.
The Oilers took a 2-1 lead during a 4-on-4 situation with 10:41 remaining in the first. Leon Draisaitl won the faceoff draw in his own zone. Connor McDavid raced down the right side of the ice with the puck all the way to the high slot. He made a drop pass and Bouchard scored his seventh playoff goal on a second-attempted snap shot from the high slot.
The Panthers tied it up 2-2 with 8:23 to go in the period. Schmidt fed a pass from the top of the zone and Luostarinen connected a cross-ice pass from the right-circle dot. Seth Jones released a shot from the low left circle for his fourth goal of the postseason.
It became 3-2 for Edmonton on a power-play goal with 7:23 left in the first. McDavid skated from the left point to the slot area and angled a pass. Draisaitl snapped a shot from the low right circle for his 10th goal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In the second period, the Cats made it 3-3 at 8:23. Jones pushed the puck ahead from the right point and Carter Verhaeghe zipped a diagonal pass from the low right circle. Dmitry Kulikov fired a snap shot from the top of the zone for second playoff tally. It turned out to be Kulikov's third career goal in 72 postseason contests.
Florida got a shorthanded goal with 7:51 remaining in the second and led 4-3. Anton Lundell backhanded a long outlet pass from his own zone. Brad Marchand skated into the Oilers zone on a breakaway from center ice and slipped in a forehand shot from the low slot for his sixth goal in the playoffs.
The Oilers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 2:33 to go in third period. It worked as they tied it 4-4 with 17.8 seconds left in the third. Jake Walman released a shot from the right point which went off the body of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at the top of the crease. Corey Perry steered a forehand shot from the slot area for his eighth postseason goal this year and his 62nd career playoff goal. It was latest goal ever scored in Stanley Cup Final history.
There was no scoring either team during overtime and it remained 4-4. The Panthers won the game 5-4 in double overtime at the 8:05 mark. Lundell make a long lead pass from the Florida blue line. Marchand gathered the puck at the red line and went down the middle of the ice on another breakaway. He motored though the slot area and slid a backhand shot from the top of the crease in between the legs of Skinner for his second goal of the contest, seventh tally of the playoffs and 63rd career postseason goal. Marchand chalked up his 10th career Stanley Cup Final goal and his third goal in this series.
