The Florida Panthers were steamrolled by the Carolina Hurricanes 6-2 on Saturday night at PNC Arena. The Cats lost their starting goalie Jose Theodore just two minutes in the game due to a lower-body injury. Scott Clemmensen replaced him for the final 58 minutes.
Carolina(11-8-1) jumped on the the Cats with three goals in the first ten minutes of the contest. Left wing Jussi Jokinen scored at 6:23, followed by center Jiri Tlusty at 8:39 and Jokinen again at 9:28.
Florida(6-10-5) broke the shutout with 2:19 left in the first period as left wing Shawn Matthias put in his fourth goal this season with assists from center Jerred Smithson and right wing George Parros.
The Canes extended their lead to 5-1 during the second period as center Riley Nash got a tally at 5:22 then center Eric Staal converted at 13:03.
The Cats added a goal with 45 seconds to go in the second period as defenseman Filip Kuba scored his first goal of the season to cut the margin down to 5-2. Center Marcel Goc and defenseman Tyler Strachan also picked up assists on the play.
Staal wrapped the game up with his second goal of the game and 12th goal this season with just under eight minutes remaining in the third period.
The Panthers had no opportunities on the power play while Carolina was 0-for-4. The Cats were outshot in all three periods at 34-24 overall. Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward made 22 saves as he goes to 8-6-1 while Clemmensen made 27 saves on 33 shots in the loss and fell to 2-2-2. Both teams finish the home-and-home series on Sunday in Sunrise.
