The National Hockey League Players Association has approved the realignment of divisions. The NHL Board of Governors are expected to vote for this measure sometime next week. The new NHL alignment will be implemented for the 2013-14 season and will be reevaluated after the 2014-15 season for possible expansion or franchise moves.
The Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning will break from the five-team Southeast Division. They will join an eight-team division that would consist of all five teams from the Northeast Division which includes the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators. The Detroit Red Wings will also join the new division as they shift from the Western Conference.
The Panthers have played in the same division with their cross-state rival Lightning since its inception back in the 1993-94 season. The Cats played the Boston Bruins in the first round of the NHL playoffs during the 1995-96 season and defeated them in five games for their first playoff series victory.
