The Florida Panthers finished a five-game road trip with a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night. The Cats picked up four out of a possible ten points while away and host the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.
Florida(9-19-6), who lost their third straight game, got the first goal of the game at 6:39 of the first period. Left wing Tomas Fleischmann placed a wrist shot from the top right circle by Leafs goalie Ben Scrivens for his seventh goal this season.
Toronto(18-12-4) evened the game at 1-1 during the second period at 9:41. Defenseman Dion Phaneuf delayed then blasted a slap shot from the right point beyond Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom.
Both teams combined for three goals in the first 3:26 of the third period. The Maple Leafs scored on the power play 22 seconds into the frame as left wing Joffrey Lupul redirected the puck from the low slot off a pass from center Tyler Bozak on the right side.
The Florida tied the game quickly just 33 seconds later. Center Shawn Matthias brought the puck from his own end through the right side of the neutral zone. He entered the Leafs zone, went around a defenseman in the right circle and snapped a shot in from the right of the crease to make it 2-2. Matthias scored his tenth goal which equalled his season-high from last season.
The Maple Leafs jumped ahead again at 3:26 as Lupul put in his second goal of the game on a wrist shot from close range. That turned out to be the game-winning goal for Toronto.
Markstrom dropped to 3-8-1 as he made 28 saves where his counterpart Scrivens stopped 40 of 42 shots and improved to 7-8-0. Florida went 0-for-1 and Toronto went 1-for-3 on the power play.
