The University of Miami Hurricanes captured their first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final as they prevailed 87-77 over the University of North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Hurricanes won their first ACC regular season title last weekend and received a number-two seed in the NCAA basketball tournament.
They will play the Pacific Tigers in the second round of the tournament on Friday in Austin, Texas. It was the first time that a school did not receive a number-one seed after winning both ACC honors.
Shane Larkin was the leading scorer for The U with 28 points, seven assists and five rebounds in 40 minutes of play. Trey McKinney Jones knocked down 20 points in 35 minutes and Julian Gamble added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes for the Hurricanes. Non-starter Rion Brown got 12 points in 27 minutes.
UNC was headed by P.J. Hairston with 28 points in 35 minutes and Marcus Paige with 17 points in 36 minutes. James Michael McAdoo, son of Miami Heat assistant coach Bob McAdoo, contributed 12 points and five rebounds in 32 minutes. Reggie Bullock dropped in 11 points with seven rebounds in 38 minutes for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina(24-10, 12-6) had their final lead of the game at 67-64 with 9:22 left in the second half. Miami(27-6, 15-3) went on a 23-10 run in the final stretch and extended the margin to double digits.
