The Florida Panthers had a two-game winning streak end on Saturday night as they fell to the New Jersey Devils 2-1 at Prudential Center. It was the first time both teams have met each other since their first-round seven-game playoff series last season. Devils left wing Adam Henrique scored the winning goal to wrap up game 7 in double overtime.
Neither team scored in the first period but they combined for three goals in the second period. New Jersey(15-11-6) broke the tie just 1:24 into the second frame. Center Travis Zajac brought a loose puck from the neutral zone down the right side, sent a cross-ice pass to right wing Patrick Elias and he redirected it from the slot by Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen.
The Devils added to their lead at 11:03 as center David Clarkson blasted a shot from the slot area from a feed by Zajac who picked up a loose puck at center ice.
Florida(9-17-6) pulled within a goal in an unusual way with ten seconds left in the period. Devils goalie Martin Brodeur stopped the puck behind his cage and attempted pass out the puck around the boards. Left wing Tomas Fleischmann stopped it along the end wall, found right wing Peter Mueller alone in the crease and he buried a shot into the open net for his seventh goal this season.
New Jersey was outshot 7-2 in the first period, but the Devils had an overall shot advantage of 25-18. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play as both special teams squads were held scoreless. Brodeur stopped 17 of 18 shots for his 666th NHL win and moved his record to 10-2-3 this season while Clemmensen made 23 saves and dropped to 2-6-2. The Cats travel to Long Island and face the New York Islanders on Sunday.
