The Florida Panthers played their third game in four days in the New York metropolitan area and lost to the New York Islanders 3-0 at Nassau Coliseum on Sunday. The Cats will finish their five-game road trip in Toronto on Tuesday.
New York(14-15-3) scored on their first power play of the game at 6:05 of the first period. Center Franz Nielsen passed the puck from the left circle to defenseman Andrew MacDonald on the right point and he fired a slap shot by goalie Jacob Markstrom. There was no scoring by either team in the second period.
Florida(9-18-6) decided to pull the goalie for an extra skater in the final minute of the third period. Center John Tavares scored his 19th goal this season with 31 seconds left when he put a wrist shot from the Panthers blue line into an empty net.
The Islanders added another empty-net tally with 13 seconds remaining as center Casey Cizikas let go a wrist shot from the left wing.
The Panthers were 0-for-2 on the man advantage while the Isles were 1-for-2. Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov picked up his 55th career shutout with 26 saves and moved up to 14-10-3 while Markstrom dropped to 3-6-1 as he stopped 34 shots.
