After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, Carter spent his final NFL season with the Miami Dolphins in 2002. He compiled eight pass receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown that year.
Carter was an assistant coach for the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s. He was there when the Raiders captured FHSAA state championships in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Carter was there when his son Duron Carter played there as a wide receiver.
He went into television and worked at ESPN from 2008 to 2016 along with HBO. Carter co-hosted the First Things First morning show at Fox Sports 1 from December 2016 to October 2019.
