The two-time defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders slammed the Atlantic Eagles 43-7 at Brian Piccolo Stadium in a Class 7A regional quarterfinal on Friday night. The Raiders eliminated the Eagles in a postseason contest for the fifth occasion. They same result occurred in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2019.
St. Thomas Aquinas(10-1) struck at the 6:46 mark of the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. Running back Anthony Hankerson rushed through the left side of the line from five yard away. It became 8-0 when the Eagles snapped the ball over the head of the punter and out of the back of the end zone for a safety with 4:24 to go in the first.
STA made it 22-0 with 2:56 remaining in the second. Quarterback Zion Turner faked a handoff and raced down the left hash marks for a 22-yard touchdown run.
The Raiders extended it to 29-0 in the final minute of the first half. Hankerson busted up the middle and scored from two yards out.
In the third quarter, St. Thomas Aquinas increased it to 36-0 at 7:10. Hankerson scored his third touchdown of the game on a two-yard run through the right side of the line. A running clock was then implemented for the remainder of the contest.
Atlantic(5-6) broke the shutout with 7:32 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Lincoln Graf connected a 20-yard strike to wide receiver Fredrick Gaskin on the right sideline. STA responded back on their next possession with another touchdown for a 36-point margin.
