The Islanders finished off a 13-game road trip to begin the 2021-22 regular season. They will open up their new venue UBS Arena on Saturday night and host the Calgary Flames in their first home game ever in that facility.
Florida(11-2-3) raced out to a 1-0 lead at the 6:57 mark of the first period. Jonathan Huberdeau scored his fifth goal of the season on assists from Anthony Duclair and Aleksander Barkov.
The Panthers compiled three more goals in the final six minutes of the first and led 4-0. Ryan Lomberg got his first tally of the year with 5:20 remaining, Carter Verhaeghe found the net for the fourth time this season with 3:56 to go and Patric Hornqvist capped it with an unassisted goal with 1:47 left.
In the second period, New York(5-6-2) trailed by a five-goal margin with 6:19 remaining. Aaron Ekblad picked up his fifth goal of the season after an assist by MacKenzie Weegar.
The Islanders finally got on the scoreboard with 5:00 left in the second. Kyle Palmieri placed his first goal of the campaign and they were down 5-1.
The Cats extended their lead to 6-1 with 3:34 remaining in the third period. Frank Vatrano got his fourth tally this year.
