The Miami Central Rockets visit Plantation and face the American Heritage Patriots at Heritage Field in a Class 5A regional semifinal contest on Friday night. It is a clash between two current state champions from last year.
Miami Central(8-2) is the defending Class 6A state champions and moved down to a lower classification in 2021. Following two loses to national powerhouses St. John Bosco and Bishop Gorman to begin the regular season, the Rockets won eight consecutive games. They have outscored their opponents 402-108 this season and allowed just 51 points in their last eight games. Miami Central pounded North Miami Beach 49-6 last week in a regional quarterfinal.
The Rockets can go with Keyone Jenkins or Dylan Tulloch at quarterback. Running backs Ghana Oboh, Ean Pope and Jonathan Harris will get their rushing opportunities. Wide receivers Zaylan Reese, Lamar Seymore, Corey Washington, Joshisa Trader and Cataurus Hicks are expected to make catches downfield.
American Heritage(6-3) comes in as the defending Class 5A state champions. The Patriots frontloaded their 2021 schedule in the first five contests against playoff-bound teams Treasure Coast, Chaminade-Madonna, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cardinal Gibbons and Trinity Christian Academy. It is a rarity that the Pats were defeated at home twice during the regular season. They have won four straight games and outscored their opponents 176-21 in those contests. American Heritage has defeated Boynton Beach twice in the last three weeks, which included a 42-14 regional quarterfinal victory last week.
The Patriots have two capable quarterbacks with Brandon Inniss and Blake Murphy. Mark Fletcher leads a core of the running backs that includes Reggie Williams, Byron Louis and Reggie Foster. They have a slew of wide receivers with Emory Clemons, Santana Fleming and Isaiah Nesmith.
