Inter Miami CF Pounds Atletico de San Luis

Lionel Messi broke the all-time Leagues Cup goal record as Inter Miami CF walloped Atletico de San Luis 4-2 on Wednesday night at Nu Stadium. It was the first game of the 2026 Leagues Cup for the Herons.
Messi made his first appearance with Inter Miami CF since May 24 against the Philadelphia Union. He was allowed by Major League Soccer to take a three-week rest since the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on July 19.
It was a shocking start when Atletico de San Luis scored just four minutes into the game to make it 1-0. They made a cross from the right side and David Rodriguez redirected a header into the low left corner of the net from seven yards out.
The Herons evened it up 1-1 during the 11th minute. Messi volleyed a left-footed shot from 14 yards away into the right side of the cage. He tied Denis Bouanga with his 12th career Leagues Cup goal.
Inter Miami CF expanded their lead to 2-1 in the 26th minute of play. Telasco Segovia half-volleyed a shot with his right foot into an empty net from eight yards.
It became 3-1 for the Herons in the 44th minute. Messi dribbled in the middle of the penalty area and roofed a seven-yard shot with his left foot. He set a Leagues Cup record with his 13th career goal on the play.
The momentum kept going for Inter Miami CF as they increased it to 4-1 during stoppage time at the conclusion of the first half. Messi took a left-corner kick and Micael dos Santos placed in a header from eight yards that landed in the low right corner of the net.
In the second half, Atletico de San Luis cut the deficit to 4-2 in the 51st minute. Rafa Llorente one-timed a right-footed, curling shot from 19 yards away off the right post and into the cage.
