Center Derek MacKenzie was named the ninth captain in Florida Panthers franchise history on Sunday. He joins a list that included Brian Skrudland, Scott Mellanby, Paul Laus, Pavel Bure, Olli Jokinen, Bryan McCabe, Ed Jovanovski and Willie Mitchell.
MacKenzie joined the Panthers prior to the 2014-15 season. He had six goals and seven assists in 64 games last season with the team as they captured the Atlantic Division title.
Defenseman Aaron Ekblad and forward Jussi Jokinen will serve as alternate captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season. The home opener for the club will be on Thursday night against the New Jersey Devils.
