The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs challenge the North Marion Colts in the FHSAA Class 5A state championship game at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Friday.
Cardinal Gibbons(12-2) is on a 12-game winning streak entering this contest. The Chiefs have outscored their last 12 opponents 380-113. They routed Merritt Island 49-14 in a regional quarterfinal, downed district rival American Heritage 35-7 in a regional semifinal, got by Jones 30-27 in a regional final and stopped Jesuit 14-3 in a state semifinal.
The Chiefs can rely on their rushing attack with running backs Vincent Davis and Tajae Davis in the backfield splitting the opportunities. Brody Palhegyi has stepped in at quarterback for an injured Nik Scalzo and will connect passes to wide receivers Dimon Stewart, Dijon Senior, Troy Stellato, Nicholas Ogneneovic, Majon Wright, Jake Harrington and Chris Benestad.
North Marion(12-2) has won their last nine games. The Colts have outscored their last nine opponents 352-148. They eased by Menendez 27-22 in the regional quarterfinal, defeated Zephyrhills 40-21 in the regional semifinal, beat Nature Coast Tech 29-22 in the regional final and surprised Trinity Christian Academy 29-25 in the state semifinal. Quarterback Corey Wilsher will led the Colts on offense.
