The Minnesota Wild beat the Florida Panthers 5-1 at Xcel Energy Center on Thursday night. The Panthers have not won in Minnesota since the 2009-10 season. The Cats, who are 0-3-1 in their last four games, return home on Saturday and face the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Florida(11-13-6) got on the scoreboard just once at the 2:20 mark of the first period. Denis Malgin compiled his first goal of the year on assists from MacKenzie Weegar and Frank Vatrano.
The Wild tied it up 1-1 with 4:38 left in the first. Nino Niederreiter put the puck in the cage with assists from Ryan Suter and Mathew Dumba. Niederreiter got his second goal of the contest at 11:54 of the second period from Suter to move ahead.
Minnesota(17-12-2) extended their gap with 4:31 remaining in the period as Eric Staal scored his 11th goal of the campaign. Mikael Granlund and Jared Spurgeon were credited with assists on the play.
They made it 4-1 just 1:02 into the third period as Zach Parise placed his 14th goal of the season. Niederreiter and Suter both got their third points of the game on assists. Jonas Brodin put in a tally several minutes later at 3:51.
