The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders pounded the Venice Indians 42-0 in the Class 7A state semifinal at Brian Piccolo Stadium on Friday night. It was the fourth consecutive year that both schools met in the state semifinal round. The Raiders will be going to the championship game for the 12th time in the last 16 seasons.
St. Thomas Aquinas(13-0) was able to score at 6:03 of the first quarter. Quarterback Zion Turner finished the drive on a one-yard sneak up the middle and they led 7-0.
STA made it 14-0 later in the first. Turner found wide receiver Marcus Rosemy on the left hash marks. Rosemy broke several tackles as he went toward the left sideline and scored from 23 yards away.
The Raiders increased it to a 21-point margin with 20 seconds left in the second quarter. Wide receiver Jahvante Royal caught the ball from Turner on the left hash marks, angled to the middle of the field and scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
In the third quarter, St. Thomas Aquinas scored on their first possession. Turner went on an option run and scored from 41 yards out at 9:47 for a 28-0 lead.
Venice(8-5) gave up another touchdown several minutes later. Defensive back Ja'Den McBorrows intercepted a pass throw by Indians quarterback Ryan Overstreet and returned it for a score to make it 35-0. A running clock was implemented for the rest of the contest.
The Raiders added another score midway in the fourth quarter for a 42-0 gap. Running back Khalid Shakir was able to race in on a carry from nine yards away.
