The Western Wildcats challenge the Columbus Explorers for the Region 4 title in Class 8A at Tropical Park on Thursday night. It is the first regional final to be played in South Florida this week.
Western(9-2), who have compiled seven shutouts this year, upset the top seed in the region Miami Palmetto 21-19 in the second round. They have won seven of their last eight contests. The Wildcats are in the third round as they were two years ago. Their rushing attack consists of running backs Miles Friday, Khaheim Simon, Jason Beneby and Joey Vega. Wide receivers Karaun St. Louis, Shemarr Wright and Danny Panchookian can receive the ball from quarterback Collin Hurst.
Columbus(8-4) have won their last four games and outscored their opponents 154-49 during that span. The Explorers defeated their district rival Coral Gables 50-14 in the first round and dropped Miami 35-2 last week in the regional semifinal. The 2018 Class 8A state finalist will look toward running back Henry Bryant Jr. to carry the ball from the backfield. Quarterback Brandon McDuffey can connect passes to wide receivers Xzavier Henderson, Christopher Gilbert, Trynyty Conway, Ken Moore and Jahvar McSween.
